September 25th “Gobblers of Catan: Gravy”

Gravy. The greatest resource of them all.

2010|365: A Design Project
In an effort to keep from getting creatively stagnant as I go through the course of a 9-5 design job, as well as staving off general laziness, I’ve undertaken this personal project.
Every day, rain, shine or somewhere inbetween, I will be making something cool. The results may be photos, design pieces, experimental type, videos, or anything else I feel is worth showing. The only caveat will be that each piece will have to be made that day, even though it might not get posted on the same day.
The end result of the project will be a book (possibly 365 pages long, maybe shorter to reduce costs), which I will make available to anyone who wants to pay for one.

September 24th “Gobblers of Catan: Turkey”

I know turkey isn’t a resource in the traditional sense of the word, but it probably should be.

September 23rd “Cherry Vanilla Walnut Loaf”

September 24th, 2010 § 0

265|365

I did a little baking tonight to make up for my chai-related failure. And this turned out rather well, or at least my coworkers seemed to think so.

Vanilla Cherry Walnut Loaf

2 c plain flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 c white sugar
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c butter
2 beaten eggs
1/2 c milk
3 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 c chopped walnuts
1 c sour cherries in syrup
1/4 tsp cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a loaf pan.
Mix flour, cinnamon and baking soda together in a bowl.
In another bowl, cream together the white sugar, brown sugar and butter.
Add in the eggs, milk and vanilla and mix until smooth.
Add in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring constantly.
Stir in the cherry halves and chopped walnuts.
Spoon the mixture into your prepared loaf pan and bake at 350 for around 1 hour 20 minutes. Just keep an eye on it. Test with a toothpick.
When the loaf is cooked fully remove from the oven and allow to cool in the loaf pan for 10 minutes before removing from the pan and placing on a wire cooling rack to cool fully.
Done. Eat.

September 22nd “The Cultch Campaign”

While I know I’ve posted about this a bunch of times, it was my baby (since I did the photography, design, the copy-writing and a fair chunk of the art direction) and it’s been pretty darn cool to see my work up all around the city. Please forgive the photo quality, shooting a glowing image in a lit shelter at night in the city.

To see basically the whole thing start to finish:
The Concept Video
The Shooting Plan
The Shoot
The Rollout

September 21st “Chai Fail”

September 22nd, 2010 § 0

263|365

As part of my ongoing project to develop a nice spicy masala chai recipe, I’m happy to present you with today’s recipe for how NOT to make it.

1 Thumb of Cinnamon
12 Pods of Green Cardamom
8 Whole Peppercorns
5 Whole Cloves
2 Whole Allspice
1/4 tsp Crushed Nutmeg
1/4 tsp Ground Ginger
1/4 tsp Ground Cayenne Pepper

Roughly grind cinnamon through nutmeg, combine with ginger and cayenne, and add to 2 & 1/2 cups of boiling water. Reduce heat to simmer and cover for ten minutes. Add 1 cup of milk, 1 tsp butter, and 1 & 1/2 chunks of jagri (or same amount of brown sugar), and simmer for 5 minutes. Add 2 &1/2 tsp of assam or any black tea. Remove from heat and let steep for 3 minutes.

Drink, and feel the burn.
Much much too spicy.

Some closer to resolved mock-ups for the backs of the development cards and resource cards respectively, for Gangstas of Catan.
Time to throw some D’s on this game.

September 18th “Tiny Photographer: Urban Wildlife”

September 21st, 2010 § 0

260|365

I was walking along the Drive with the ladyfriend, and quite a lot of groceries, when I looked down and just barely managed to avoid stepping onto a wee cement-colored critter sitting on the sidewalk. After a moment I also notice my other diminutive friend waiting close by in the bushes for the perfect shot.

September 16th “I’ll Never Be an Architect…”

September 21st, 2010 § 0

258|365

As a side effect of sorta working for an architecture firm, I’ve been called upon to get familiarized with SketchUp as of late. It’s pretty neat, and quite easy to use, but I have been forced to accept that there’s just some things I’ll probably never have much of a knack for.
